Frequently Asked Questions
DONOR SPERMWhat type of specimen should I order?
ICI specimens, why might you choose this option?
If you plan to perform an intra-cervical insemination (also known as vaginal insemination) which is the placement of the sperm near, but not inside of the cervix, the ICI preparation is suitable. The insemination may be performed in the privacy of your own home without the assistance of a medical provider. ICI specimens are "unwashed" and similar to a "raw" ejaculate which contains natural nutrients, proteins, sperm cells, etc. Unwashed samples are similar to the deposit made during intercourse. https://www.nwcryobank.com/general-sperm-information/
ICI specimens may only be used for an intra-cervical insemination, unless the sample is put through a washing procedure by your medical provider. If the ICI specimen is placed directly into the cervix or the uterus, severe cramping and even shock may occur. Once washed, it may be used for an IUI (intra-uterine insemination) or IVF (In-vitro Fertilization treatment). If you plan to have your medical provider perform your insemination, ask if they prefer you purchase an ICI (unwashed), or an IUI (washed) specimen. Most fertility doctors and/or clinics can wash specimens prior to treatments. Note: If the specimen undergoes additional processing by your clinic prior to insemination, the motility guarantee will be void.
IUI specimens, why might you choose this option?
If you plan to perform an intra-cervical insemination (also known as vaginal insemination) which is the placement of the sperm near, but not inside of the cervix, the IUI preparation is suitable. The insemination may be performed in the privacy of your own home without the assistance of a medical provider. Or, if you plan to have your medical provider perform the insemination, the IUI preparation may be required. It is best to ask if your provider prefers you purchase an ICI (unwashed), or an IUI (washed) specimen. Most fertility doctors and/or clinics can wash specimens prior to treatments. Note: If the specimen undergoes additional processing by your clinic prior to insemination, the motility guarantee will be void.
IUI specimens are "washed". The term "washed" means that the raw ejaculate is put through a density gradient to remove dead and poorly performing sperm, and other unnecessary contents. This process creates specimens with a high concentration of motile sperm. https://www.nwcryobank.com/general-sperm-information/
ICI-IVF specimens, why might you choose this option?
ICI-IVF specimens are "unwashed" and similar to a "raw" ejaculate which contains natural nutrients, proteins, sperm cells, etc. Unwashed samples are similar to the deposit made during intercourse. These specimens have a lower sperm count than our standard vial making them suitable for an IVF procedure with a Fertility Clinic or Reproductive Endocrinologist. These specimens are also suitable for an intra-cervical insemination (also known as vaginal insemination) which is the placement of the sperm near, but not inside of the cervix. The insemination may be performed in the privacy of your own home without the assistance of a medical provider. Because the sperm count is lower than our standard vials, it might be advisable to consider purchasing 2 vials for each attempted insemination.
How do I know how many vials to order?
If you are working with a medical provider, that question is best answered by the provider. If you are performing your inseminations at home without the use of a medical provider, you are welcome to order as many or as few as you like. Our statistics reveal that our clients who have reported pregnancies use 1.8 vials (on average) per cycle with a range of 1-6 vials per cycle. Some clients suggest purchasing 3 vials and inseminating at 12, 24, and 36 hours post LH surge. This is your decision and one that is often weighed on factors such as how quickly you hope to conceive as well as your personal financial situation. Our donor inventory can change rapidly. If you are considering the possibility of additional children and you wish them to be full siblings, you may want to consider purchasing additional vials of your donor for use at a later time. The vials may be stored at our facility until you are ready to use them. We offer a vial buy back program in the event you no longer wish to maintain ownership of your previously purchased vials. Your vials may be purchased for immediate shipping, or you may choose to store them at NW Cryobank for future use.
How long can I keep my dewar for once it has shipped?
NW Cryobank guarantees the vials to stay frozen in the container for 7 days from the time you receive your package. The dewars are designed to last about 2 weeks; so, it is possible to keep the dewar a few days extra if needed, but it is no longer in our guarantee if the dewar should fail. There is also a fee each day that the dewar is kept passed the 7th day.
At what point in my pregnancy should I report a positive to NW Cryobank?
We normally suggest waiting until you are about 6 weeks along to report a pregnancy to us. It can also be reported when the pregnancy has been determined to no longer be chemical, but is now considered clinical.
What do I need in order to transfer ownership of my vials to another client?
In order to transfer ownership of vials from one client to another including between partners, NW Cryobank will need a completed registration for both parties, a bill of sale, and a paid transfer fee to NW Cryobank. NW Cryobank does not handle any of the payment for the selling price of the vial, only the transfer fee.
The bill of sale can be faxed, emailed, or mailed to our office. The bill of sale must include the following items:
-The date of sale
-Account name and number for both parties
-Donor number, number of, and types for all vials being sold/transferred
-Statement of relinquishment of rights to the vials from the selling party
-Statement of which party will be paying the transfer fee
-Signatures of both the seller and the buyer
When our office has received the bill of sale, the party paying the transfer fee can pay the transfer fee through their online account by clicking on the merchandise section of the purchase center. Once we have both of the bill of sale and payment, the vials will be transferred to the buyer's account into a current storage account or a monthly storage account will be created if none currently exists. All previous storage accounts must be paid in full prior to the transfer. Storage cannot be transferred between clients. If you have any questions, please email our office at email@example.comAre there security features in place to provides clients with peace of mind when purchasing products on the NW Cryobank website?
The NW Cryobank store is secure (using SSL encryption) when checking out in order to provide our clients with a safe shopping environment. We do not share client information of any type with any outside parties, at any time. We use a 3rd party merchant services account to assure safety when processing credit cards.
We always first obtain authorization for your purchase, and all name, address, and CVV information must match exactly as part of our fraud protection for both you and us. Should you provide us with either address or CVV information that does not match the information on file for your card, your sale will not be completed and your card company may restrict further use of funds and or credit in the amount of the attempted purchase for up to 1-14 days (due to the authorization process), so please be sure to provide complete and accurate card information. Should you accidentally provide information that does not match with the card data, we will attempt to notify you of the problem by phone or email the same or following business day in order to obtain the correct information, which would allow us to complete your purchase.
Will I be notified if my order is delayed?
While it does not happen frequently, there are occasions when an order may be delayed due to a product being back-ordered. If you order a product that is back-ordered, you will receive notification via e-mail and and given the option to complete or cancel the order at that time. All sale prices on back-ordered items will be honored.
Do you allow for pick-ups instead of having the vials shipped?
All packages must be shipped out of our facility as we must take every measure to ensure the anonymity of our donors is protected.
Does NW Cryobank offer "Web Only" specials?
From time to time, we will offer "Web Only" specials on products available in the NW Cryobank store. "Web Only" specials are only available online.
Does NW Cryobank offer special pricing for products ordered in bulk?
If you are interested in purchasing any product in bulk, please send us an email so that we can quote you the best pricing possible for the product that you need.
Does NW Cryobank offer international shipping?
While NW Cryobank does offer international shipping, the prices listed in the store are for products shipped through the US Postal Service and reflect domestic mail service costs only. All products ordered for delivery outside of the United States will incur additional shipping charges.
Does NW Cryobank observe stated holidays?
Yes, our office is closed for the following holidays:
New Year Day (if it lands on Saturday, we are closed on Friday, if it lands on Sunday, we are closed on Monday)
Independence Day (if it lands on Saturday, we are closed on Friday, if it lands on Sunday, we are closed on Monday)
Friday after Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day (if it lands on Saturday, we are closed on Friday, if it lands on Sunday, we are closed on Monday)
When an order is placed, can the shipping date be specified?
Yes, for each order that ships out, you can select the shipping date and method. Based on the ship date and shipping method that is chosen, the expected arrival date will be displayed on the website. How far in advance do orders need to be placed?
Orders placed by 2 pm PST Monday-Friday (excluding holidays as listed above) can be requested to ship that same day. However, it is preferred that orders be placed in advance whenever possible to ensure availability and allow time in case any changes need to be made.
Am I able to track my order?
Yes, tracking information is emailed out for each order. The tracking information is also able to be viewed through your online account in each cart order once it has been shipped. Please note that tracking information will not be valid until the package has been scanned into the UPS facility, which may be late in the evening the day the package ships out.
Does my order have to be signed for when it is delivered?
Yes, a signature is required for the package. Packages can also be shipped to a prearranged local UPS Hold location. You must have someone present to receive the shipment. In the event of a missing shipment or theft, the cost of $1,000 to replace the shipping dewar would be billed to your credit card on file.
Can multiple credit cards be used for one order?
Yes. When you place your order choose the "store" option. This transaction will bill your credit card for the cost of the vials only. The first 30 days of storage is free; so, you will not be charged for storage unless a ship date is not chosen for the vials before the 30 days of free storage expires. When the order for the vials has been processed, the vials will show up onto your online account under a storage profile heading. There will be a button next to each vial that says "ship this vial". This will allow you to pay for the shipping cost, choose the ship date, and add any insemination kits to your order; using a separate credit card if you choose. Please note that this process must be done at least a few days in advance of the shipping date as our office will need time to process the order for the stored vials before the shipping option can be selected.
What paperwork is required to order?
When you select "ready to order",then "enter the purchase center", this will automatically take you through our online registration. If you are not yet ready to order, you can simply stop at the screen that asks you to select a donor. You will be sent an email if there are any problems with your registration or order.
Can orders be placed over the phone?
All orders must be placed through your online account and cannot be completed over the phone. This allows you to keep track of all orders, vials that have been shipped or stored, verify the information is correct when orders are placed, and to keep track of all past orders. It will also make things easier when it comes time to report your positive pregnancy report.
What do I need for a second parent adoption?
Most courts will require your sales receipt from NW Cryobank for the purchase and shipment of the donor vials used for the insemination that occurred in the pregnancy. They also usually ask for a copy of the release of liability that our donors must sign relinquishing any parental rights to the child. To request a copy of this, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Some courts may also require a letter from NW Cryobank. If this is the case, you or your attorney may email us the required documentation for us to review and sign. If you need a letter created by NW Cryobank, we are happy to do so as well, please email us the required information for the letter and we are happy to work with you (a processing fee may apply).
How do I choose a ship date for my vial(s)?
Upon placing your order, you have 30 days to ship your vials. If vials are left in storage beyond 30 days, your credit card will be charged the current monthly storage fee as listed on our Pricing for Products & Services page until all vials have been removed from storage. If you wish to arrange for annual storage, please contact our office to request this option.
When choosing a shipping date, you may want to plan to have your sample(s) arrive 2-3 days before ovulation. This provides a cushion of time in case you ovulate a day or two earlier than expected or your shipment gets delayed. Purchases completed prior to 2 p.m. PST are available to be shipped that day for the standard shipping rate. For example, if purchased by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, it is possible to receive your order by Friday.
Note: Shipments cannot be delivered on Saturday, Sunday or national holidays. If you select one of these days, expect your shipment the next business day. Holidays: New Year, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
donor oocytes (eggs)
As of June 2016 our vitrified donor eggs have produced the following results:
Survived Warming = 90.0%
Fertilized = 85.3%
Blasts = 52.8%
Pregnancy Rate (Clinical) = 44.8%*
Live Birth Rate = 43.7%*
*Approximately 15% of reported transfers were performed on an initial egg warm of 3 eggs rather than the standard 6 eggs thus resulting in lower percentages for pregnancy and live birth due to an increased number of transfers.
How much do your donor eggs cost?
**Basic Oocyte Purchase
1. Cost of six eggs is $10,500 or if purchasing additional eggs, $1,750 per egg.
2. I (we) completely understand that there is NO GUARANTEE with this option.
3. I (we) also understand that eggs are QC'ed prior to vitrification for quality but are not guaranteed to warm, fertilize, or create embryos for transfer.
4. Fees are subject to change without notice.
5. Orders may be cancelled at any time prior to the eggs leaving our facility. In this case NWC will issue refunds within ninety (90) day of the order cancellation.
6. The refund is limited solely to the portion of the fee paid to NWC by the Client(s). NWC assumes no responsibility for other costs, fees, interest on loans or credit card, or expensed for additional treatment.
7. There are NO program exclusions with this option.
1. Cost of six eggs ($10,500), Optional Guarantee ($5,250) Shipping ($250): Total $16,000
2. In the event the six egg purchase produces:
- Two or more embryos which reach the blastocyst stage on day 5 or 6
- A pregnancy as defined in #3 below
THEN your donor eggs will be deemed successful and no additional eggs will be provided. If neither of these events occurs, you will receive an additional set of six eggs from NW Cryobank. You will be responsible for the shipping cost of $250.
3. Pregnancy is determined by a baseline, initial quantitative beta HCG (pregnancy test) followed by a second quantitative beta HCG (pregnancy test) approximately two days later with increased values.
4. Every effort will be made to provide the same egg donor as first selected, but it is not possible in some cases. NW Cryobank will discuss the options at the time of purchase. Alternatively if you prefer, you may switch to a new donor if a second cycle is required.
5. Orders may be cancelled at any time prior to the eggs leaving our facility. In this case NWC will issue refunds within thirty (30) days of the order cancellation.
6. Fees are subject to change without notice.
Does NWC offer a Live Birth Guarantee?
We do have a Live Birth offering with select clinics. Please contact the Egg Donor Coordinator at 509-232-0132 to find out if your clinic and NWC has such an offering.
Will my insurance cover the cost of donor eggs?
This would be something to discuss with your clinic as NWC does not work with insurance companies in any manner. We always provide a detailed receipt, so if any of our services are indeed covered you would want to submit that receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement. The financial coordinator at your clinic will be able to further assist you in this aspect.
How soon can I proceed with using donor eggs from your bank?
All of our donors listed in the Available section of the egg donor catalog have vitrified eggs ready to ship once registration has been completed and payment has been accepted. Because inventories vary by donor, you will want to look for the image below the donor number which indicates that donor has a low quantity of eggs available (fewer than 12).
Donors listed in the Upcoming section have been scheduled for retrieval and should have eggs available within a month or two after being placed in the Upcoming status. Once they have been retrieved and the eggs have been placed into inventory, they will be moved into the Available section and are then ready for purchase.
If you are working with a clinic we have not worked with in the past, there are a couple steps which would need to be accomplished prior to ordering/shipping. Please see our list of current clinics and contact us if you are working with a clinic outside of this list.
How often do you add new donors?
We are always striving to add new donors to our catalog with applications being received and screened daily. Not until the applicant has made it through application process and is scheduled for retrieval will they appear in the donor catalog as UpcomingÂÂ. With that said, the number of new donors is dependent upon the interest shown and the quality of applications at any given time. Please see Quality of Donors for more information on our donor standards.
Can I see photos of the donors?
Yes! Most of our egg donors have given permission for their adult and childhood photos to be viewed from our website.

Frozen vs. Fresh:
ASRM Press Release: October 16, 2013
From March 2012 to February 2013, outcomes for 113 fresh egg recipients were compared to those for 77 frozen recipients. Clinical pregnancy rates were 60% for fresh cycles and 57% for frozen cycles. Cancellation rates differed quite a bit: only 1.2% of frozen cycles were cancelled, compared to 12% of fresh cycles.
Costs were lower for patients who used frozen eggs. The cost per transfer for frozen egg patients was $17,500 with an average cost of $30,532 per clinical pregnancy. For patients using fresh eggs, the cost per transfer was $29,621 and the average cost per clinical pregnancy was $49,530.
In addition, using frozen eggs also resulted in a time savings for patients. The average time from a patient's initial consult to the cycle start was 217 days for a fresh cycle and 172 for a frozen cycle. In the last six months of the study period, frozen egg cycles accounted for 61% of all donor egg cycles.
ASRM President, Linda Giudice, MD, PhD, observed, "Frozen egg banking is a promising development for patients and donors alike. Because the costs are lower and a shorter waiting time is involved, more patients are likely to find frozen donor eggs a very appealing alternative to fresh donor eggs."
